Stratford-upon-Avon is a market town in the Midland’s county of Warwickshire, with over 800 years of history. Mainly thanks to the link with Shakespeare, the town is a popular tourist destination, bringing in roughly 2.5 million visitors a year.
The town’s history is very well preserved with a number of buildings from the time of Shakespeare remaining in their original condition. Unsurprisingly many of these buildings are related to Shakespeare himself.
Shakespeare's Birthplace is the most important and popular example, where visitors can learn about life in the 1600s and Shakespeare’s early life.
Other Shakespearian locations include Hall's Croft (home to William's daughter), Nash's House and New Place, where the poet spent his last days, and the home of his wife, Anne Hathaway's cottage. Mary Arden, was the mother of Shakespeare and her childhood home, Mary Arden’s farm’ is a popular attraction.
Perhaps the most famous attraction in Stratford-upon-Avon is the Royal Shakespeare Company, a theatre company renowned for its outstanding production of Shakespeare’s plays, as well works by modern writers.
It’s not all about Shakespeare in Stratford-upon-Avon though, visitors can enjoy gardens, day trips to the Cotswolds, a cinema, and an attractive canal basin and even ghost walks.
