York

York

As a historic city, York is filled with astonishing architecture, and the narrow lanes and cobbled streets are enough to make you forget the troubles of the 21st century altogether. York Minster is at the forefront of the city’s attractions and demonstrates exquisitely the religious architecture of the Gothic period. Clifford’s Tower, on the other hand, will give you an insight into the design of a medieval fortress.

The newly updated Jorvik centre will vividly take you back to the Viking settlement; you will experience the sights, sounds and hopefully not too unsavoury smells of life 1000 years ago.

Elements of York’s bloody history still haunt the streets and inns, quite literally – York is said to be England’s most haunted city. Discover the grisly past of Yorkshire’s capital by taking one of the many ghost tours on offer; see if you can spot Mad Alice, or the Grey Lady, who is said to tickle the back of your neck when you sit in the dress circle of the Theatre Royal.

Stately homes with perfectly coiffured gardens litter the outskirts of the city. But if you’re seeking the romance of the natural world then you needn’t look far as York sits adjacent to the idyllic rolling hills and dramatic landscapes of the North Yorkshire Moors National Park.
